| Always wanted a crest. But they are miles to expensive to buy and rarely come up for sale. Only other way to get one is to play the seed lottery. So far no luck. | |

| I think you can increase a bit the probability of crest formation by grafting seedlings. | |

| I have completed degrafting and started repotting. I have to do many but I did 5 super kabutos in this morning. They were in 125 mm square pots and moved into 150 mm U-pots. Plant sizes are 120-130 mm in diameter. | |

| I repotted an Ariocarpus retusus in this afternoon. I sowed seeds on 30th August 2003. A very young seedling was grafted on a hylocereus stock. The scion was degrafted in 2006. It was rooted and grown well. As shown on the photo, I could not see any tap roots, fine roots only. The plant was in a 20 cm U-pot. The size of the plant is 17 cm in diameter. | |

| Hey hanazono is there a prefered reason for degrafting after awhile, is it for the natural look does the root stock end up giving out? | |

| My purpose of the grafting is for collecting seeds earlier. Grafted plants make more flowers than own-root plants as the result you can collect more seeds.
If you sowed seeds and grafted young seedlings in spring, you can see flowers of Ariocarpus in autumn. In the case of Astrophyutun, you can see flowers next spring. You can collect seeds from both in next spring when they are 1 year old.
I degraft all when they are 2 years old after I achieved the my purpose. We all are hard to buy cacti seeds from local/overseas and so I harvest seeds by myself.
I am quite sure the appearance of natural one is much better than that of grafted one. | |

| I repotted a mature A. asterias early in this morning. Seed sown in 2000 and so it is 16 years old. It has passed the best looking age but it shows a distinctive appearance. Number of ribs have turned to 13. I can see some hanazono character also. The size is 17 cm in diameter. | |

| I repotted 2 cacti with strong spines. I could manage the repotting job without any damage of spines. Discocactus placentiformis v latispinus f major HU640 sown seed on 6th August 2007, 14 cm in diameter I have not seen any flowers yet. Gymnocalycium spegazzinii v arnatum SP nova sown seed on 16th November 2003, 15 cm in diameter Seedling was grafted and degrafted in October 2005. | |
