i used metho in a commercial igloo context. it works well and safe for plants. the earlier you get to the problem, the better. i have actually unpotted plants and dunked the whole thing (not the roots) when i cant get the spray to go where i want. another product that works well is neem, but even wholesale its dear.

mealy love humidity, so you may need to check ventillation if it is becoming a problem.

Do the meth spirits work on red spider mites or two spotted mites?

Dunking them in metho sounds like a great idea. I am going to try that today. What happens if you put the roots in as well?

I've used metho on a paint brush to dab onto mealies. But theres always ones I miss. I think it melts their waxy coating. I've never tried it on mites myself..

i have never done the roots, so i cant say. my thought would be that it will kill the flora that are important to the chelating of minerals so the plants can absorb them. guess you could try with a cheapy and see what happens. and then what? do you repot in all new soil or dump it back in the old pot...

i have no experience with red legged mites, sorry.

Metho doesn't work on mites you need a miticide. Rogor or as it is now sold as a insect and mite killer you can get it at bigw or bunnings i think that should work. Also try kelthane miticide these should cost no more than $15 read instructions and use several treatments over several weeks. If you have a small collection you can remove them by spraying water with a little pressure to move them.
I think with any bugs we all have them if you say you don't you have not looked hard enough to find them or you only have very few plants. It is a matter of keeping on top of things and not neglecting them.
I spray everything now with different things at different times that way i control any outbreaks.

I tried the metho dip yesterday. I have a couple of plants that had a bad case of mealies, I was going to chuck them out. They were sprayed, but it looked like the bugs were coming back.

So I cleaned the soil off the roots and dunked them into a glass of metho. (Not the roots) Its a bit too soon to say, but I can't see anything living on them. I also dunked a couple of Echinopsis pups. They didn't have roots, so I pushed them right under. They look fine. I'll plant them in a while and see how they go.

Spirits and sometimes detergent to clean the seeds up a bit.

How do you use the meth spirits to clean the seeds?
When you use it to get rid of mealies, how do you apply it?

I've never used metho for Mealies I don't know where that came from.

As for seeds I just add 1:3 metho to water and sometimes a little detergent to a small bowl add the seed stir for a while, drain them and dry on paper towel. You now have clean, bacteria free seeds. Especially good, and this is why I started doing this, for Astrophytum seeds because the fruit and gunk gets caught in the little cup or indent in the seed. Works for me.

I found the same with Fongarid - one dose at the outset seemed to all they needed. But they were sealed in bags afterwards.
