Hey guy,
So Melbourne is starting to cool down and rather rapidly I might add!
I have about 15 trays of seedlings that are out in the open and am wondering how to manage them now that winter is approaching?
They're not all that big and so at this stage my plan is to dry them out and give them a winter rest along with the other cacti.
My concern is that as they are only small will they handle extended drought?

I am not sure the ages of your seedlings but I keep slightly wet condition for 0 to 2 years old seedlings through a year including winter.
If seedlings were stunted and turned to reddish by stopping watering, they need days for the recovering.

I keep young seedlings in plastic boxes.

Thanks for the advice hanazono,
They are all red at the moment due to lack of watering. I have been treating them like the rest of the cacti and reducing watering due to the cold weather.
Will start giving them more water now.

Hanazono do you keep them heated (heat mat?) during the winder or just in plastic box and left as as long as its not freezing e.g. ~4oC ?

It will be 2~3 'C in the morning of winter in here.
This temperature does not affect on cactus seedlings at all.
I do not use a heating mat.

A capillary-mat is laid on the bottom of box.
I feed water over the mat if it was dried up, not onto pots.
Since the box has a lid, the mat wet through a year normally.
It should be 100% humidity in the box.
Pots are fed water from the bottom before seed sowing in spring.
I do not feed water on both of pots and mat until next spring when seedlings are repotted.

Good to know, it gets down to simular temps here but not any lower - one advantage of city living. I was planning on keeping most seedlings in the trays for first two years before potting and keeping them damp but not wet so good to know I'm probably on the right track. hopefully no moss or orange rot issues over winter.
