Unknown market cactus...

G'day guys,

Here's a rooted cutting I picked up at the Mornington markets earlier this week. The bloke running the cactus stall didn't know what it was, except he thought it ended in "...cereus".

He did have a mature plant growing, although sadly it wasn't for sale. The growth habit of this thing is pendant-like and weeping, and reminds me somewhat of Schlumbergera. The segments are approximately 1-1.5cm thick, and up to 20cm long. The flower is pink, somewhat funnel-shaped and with long, dagger-like petals. New growth is reddish in colour.



Obviously, it's the narrow one in the blue pot.

Any ideas? I initially suspected it to be what used to be called Aporocactus, but since all the names were changed... I'm a bit lost.

I think you will find your plant is a Selenicereus i'm not sure what ssp.

Individually, the stems do look *very* Peniocereus-like. However, what I've got here is just a rooted cutting and so in this case I think appearences can be deceptive. I wish I had a photo of the mature plant this cutting was sourced from. If you can imagine my plant, but growing in a clumped, pendant fashion like Schlumbergera then you won't be far off.

I suspect Hellonasty might be onto something, although most Selenicereus that I've seen had white flowers.

I would have said Selenicereus too, which has large whit nocturnal flowers, but the pink flowers probably point toward something like Aporocactus (X mallisonii or similar?), Aporocactus are now known as Disocactus. Wait till it flowers then we'll have a better idea! here's a pic og mallisonii... just hit the link.

Cheers for the link CP... the growth habit is pretty similar, but the flower looks different in that photo. I'm thinking it's an Aporocactus hybrid of *some* sort. I guess I'll have to go along to the market this wednesday with my camera in tow and hope that the stall holder brings the same plant along.

Well, I returned to the market and got some photos of the mother plant and a flower.






Any ideas?

Maybe even heliocereus, or hybrid of, ...just a thought.

Isn't most of Heliocereus now classified under Disocactus... which means your original post was probably right on the money. I think for the time being I'll call this "Disocactus X ???"
