Cactus ID? Empty
PostSubject: Cactus ID?   Cactus ID? EmptyFri Sep 19, 2014 11:56 am

Picked up this unlabelled Collectors Corner/Paradisia plant at Bunnings.  Would anyone know what species it is?  It may not be clear from the photo but the spines down the side have red tips also if that's any help ... gives the cactus a halo effect Cool  Thanks.

At first glance I am thinking espostoa but it could be a Cleistocactus or Cephalocereus. I hope that helps a bit. Its always hard to tell when they are so young.

Thanks Sneaky.  I know ID'ing plants this young is a long-shot but one never knows who may have raised one and/or someone from Paradisia is browsing the forum!  I don't recall seeing this species at Bunnings before and being a columnar, grabbed it.  (Columnars being few and far between at the local Bunnings.)

Had a closer look and am beginning to think so too.  There's a noticeable tuft of white hair emerging at apex.  The red spines could be a red herring and will disappear with age.  Paradisia certainly have Espostoa albeit usually labelled as such.

Your first inclination was correct cheers  The nursery identifies it as Espostoa Mirabilis.
