A worker at our local landfill has taken the time to construct a rather interesting desert landscape garden. One of the main features are some very large cereus cacti. They just so happen to be in full fruit. One is definitely a C. peruvianus the other with orange fruits I am unsure of. Unfortunately I was in a hurry so most of the wonderful garden is obscured by an enormous Euphobia lactea plant. Behind the big plant is an unidentified opuntia, several very large E. lactea crests, several agaves and some other desert dwelling plants.

Awesome!!!

Thats heaps of fruit there, i would say once the bats get to it, it's game on!!

They will make a huge mess of it!!

I have eaten the Opuntia fruit that was grown from home, not bad!! apart from the seeds are large.

Has anyone tried the cereus fruit?? Anyone willing to try?? Smile

I haven't tried the peruvian apples (C. peruvianus) yet but I have eaten tonnes of prickly pears (Opuntia). My great grandmother used to have a patch roughly 50 meters long by 4 meters wide. Every year we would go out and help my grandparents trim the plants and pick loads of fruit. The red ones are sweetest. The yellow ones where smaller but always produced better. One of my fondest childhood memory's.

I tried a Cereus peruvianus fruit today (the father plant is a C. aethiops) and it wasn't much. Like flavourless, seed-filled hard slime. Probably tastes better after it splits but I didn't want to share with the wildlife - I had seeds to collect!
