Brown ants invade.

I recently repotted some of my plants in a commercially produced cacti/ succulent potting mix which is quite heavy on woodchips and for the last few days have noticed tiny brown ants seem to be moving in to several of the pots. I'm a bit worried they might be white ants attracted to the woodchip and either way I don't want them to set up home in my pots.
I've read that Bunnings sells a good three in one pesticide/miticide/fungicide treatment. Does anyone have details on whether this would work to solve my ant problem and if so what it is called. If not any suggestions to fix the situation would be appreciated.

they arent white ants. white ants are killed by UV light (sunlight). if you have seen them walking around, and they are not dead, then they are not white ants. white ants are quite large and tend to build mud tunnels to get about.

now to your ants... mix a small amount of borax with hot honey. allow to cool and possibly add a tiny amount of water if it is really thick. then "draw" small tracks of honey across the ant trails. they will mass around the honey, and thats the last you'll see of them.

oh, and try using scoria or riversand mixed with some reasonable soil. wood chips do nothing of value for cacti.

Ants are attracted by a food source which is coming from two places, the soil (most likely) or your plants, well not the plants themselves but possible scale living on them and producing a nice sticky sweet residue ants just love. Look for little white, black dots or larger brown dots on the skin, those are scale and a feasting on your plants.

For a simple fix just buy 'Ant Sand' from Bunnings it's not the cheapest ($8??) stuff in the world for large areas but if it is just a few pots that will take care of them pretty quick.

The borax idea suggested above by diddi is a good one, Borax is quite safe to humans much more so than any pesticide.

Well, ants could feed of the plants themselves provided it's species that have extrafloral nectaries...like most Ferocactus and some other species.
Plus I have a colony of ants somewhere near an outdoors bed that come in and nip the antlers off flowers on some cacti while they are open

i boraxed all my ants a while ago and havent seen any for ages. not even around the bin and those sort of places, and as already mentioned reasonably friendly (except from the ant's point of view). the mix stores very well (indefinately?) and no surprize: no scale either.

I completely agree about the woodchip soil being no good. I've found it to be a total nuisance. It's the first and last time I'll be using that soil.
Thanks for the borax recipe, I'll give that a go and it'll be handy next time the black ants feel that the oncoming rains are good excuse to move indoors.
I might pick up some ant sand next time I'm in town as that would be a good deterrant for the jumping ants and any others that may be trying to build their nest in or near my plants.
Thanks Hellonasty for the warning on the scale. I'll have a close inspection tomorrow to check for them and keep a close eye out for them in future.
