PostSubject: Cactus ID    Cactus ID EmptyWed Feb 09, 2011 12:11 am

In my wanderings yesterday I came across this:

Cactus ID 5427240909_08acfd1075_z
Cactus ID 5427240633_fdcd55197b_b

Any idea what it could be? Considering the diameter of the stems, I figure it might make a decent, albeit nasty, grafting stock for seedlings.

Certainly grows like an opuntia Smile and yeah your ID looks spot on. People have had success with Opuntias as stocks, I say people because I am not one of them Wink

Found this in my travels hehehe, cactus 1 human 0

Damn, that looks painful! Well, might go grab of few cutting and try it out. not the most pleasant stock to work with though. While taking photos, I ended up with a few piece clinging to my hand like they did to your leg.

I've only tried grafting to one Opuntia species and the grafts are doing well. Not amazing fast growth, but they seem fine.

That is a really, really cool opuntia... gotta love plants that can defend themselves with such enthusiasm.

If you want a cutting, I could get you one. There were a few piece just kicking around the place, not attached to anything and just drying up.

Agreed. Nasty they might be to deal with, but they command respect at least.
