Harvesting astro seeds Empty
PostSubject: Harvesting astro seeds   Harvesting astro seeds EmptyWed Dec 03, 2008 1:34 pm

Well A few of my recent astro cross pollinations were a success. This will be my first time doing this. Was just wondering when the right time to harvest the seeds will be. On one of my larger asterias has this whitish and soft fruit on it, looks like it might be getting too heavy and also looks like it might break off soon if moved/bumped etc; what's the go with that? When are the seeds ready?

Any suggestions, I really have no idea about this.

Thanks.

Congrats !

I have only had a few too. I took them off either when the side split open or the skin started to shivel. Be very carful ants will cart them off and eat the fruit on you ! Litle buggers.

Just checked it again, and I couldn't resist fiddling with it Rolling Eyes the fruit fell off. I opened it and it's full of seeds. I am hoping they are capricorne X SK X asterias, they are either that or just plain old asterias.

Any tips on cleaning them from the fruit?

You want a few HN? Super fresh.

Re getting the seeds out there are a few ways.

Let the entire pod dry on the window sil for a few days. They will just fall out once dry, takes a few days.

Pull an end off the pod, squeeze out the juice and seeds onto a plate. Spread them out a bit an put on window sil to dry. Once dry they cone right off. works faster.

i like to use a cloth and rub them a bit when still wet to get all teh fruit pulp off. i have had a few issues before with sowing seeds with dried fruit stuff on it and mold. other than that, i just collect them when the fruit either splits or is easily pulled off.

I just rub mine off (pulp and seed ) onto a piece of paper, and let them dry for a short time.

I noticed two of my astros flowered the other day - a normal asterias and a asterias nudum cv raised ribs - I'm hoping my only two flowers pollinated and I get some fruit from each.

xmas shopping got in the way of me noticing them flower until after they closed over, but I have 2 more flowers on the way.
