PostSubject: diy greenhouse/shelter?   diy greenhouse/shelter? EmptyMon Sep 26, 2016 2:06 pm

I didnt know which forum to post this is in but yeah.

I currently have my collection under the back verandah but it really gets no light, most of my collection has become etiolated and im going to have to move them.
The only place i can move them is into the backyard against the house but the problem is that the wind and rain comes in straight at it. My idea is to build a bench about 3m long x 1m wide and 1.5m high with a supporting roof of clear laserlite and clear laserlite sides and an angled sheet of laserlite out the front to act as a verandah and keep the runoff off the plants. I have a problem with indian myna birds (absolute rodents) unpotting my plants so either bird netting or plastic cyclone fencing draped over the front.
My question is does anyone have any other opinions or ideas i could look into and does anyone know if clear laserlite will allow enough light through for good growth?
Also anyone got some photos of their own diy shelters/greenhouses?

Sunlight through clear laserlite is too strong and will burn cacti in summer.

I also use clear laserlight but laid 50% white shade cloths inside of greenhouse permanently.
Cacti grow well in the greenhouse.

For your information:

Nice setup hanazono, do you think you would be able to grab me a photo of the inside?
How is the airflow/ventilation in it?

This is a part of inside.
A normal camera can not take all area at once.

A special camera is used and show all area.
Left top is the door.

A set of double door are used.
Inner door is laserlite and outer door is shade cloth.
Inner door is opened except winter.
Air flows in through the shade cloth door.
Room is not tightly sealed. Many gaps are between laserlite and supporting timbers.

I try to minimize the pollination caused by insects.
Shade cloth seals all gaps.

Link below was my greenhouse build. It is doing really well so far. The roof was a bit of a muck around but you could make it a standard roof with laserlight panels. This one suits well in the tropics. Loads of ventilation and no rain gets in. You may have to use a different shade cloth down south because of the colder winter months.
