Hi guys and gals,

This is an unknown Opuntia growing beside our local bridge. Does anyone know what it might be? I used some as a grafting stock for some Pelecyphora seedlings. Its a bit slow compared to hylos and pereskopsis but its incredibly resilient, rot resistant and long lasting. Also the small segments make it easy to hide the grafting stock underground.

Sorry for the crap quality. They where taken on an iphone and I was in a rush. If they aren't good enough for an I.D. ill take better ones tomorrow.

It's definitely an Opuntia species, at first I thought Opuntia Cylindrica, but changed my mind.

I did a bit of digging and it appears (to me) to be a smaller version of Opuntia cochenillifera. Not sure whether the smaller segment size is an environmental influence or genetic but, I'm inclined to say environmental. A cutting I rooted last season shows slightly larger and flatter segments.

Yeah Opuntia vary appearance greatly. Age and environment are the biggest factors, I would give that a go as a grafting stock some opuntia's are good.
