| Here are my new plants purchased from gumtree ad. Thanks for viewing & I'm happy to share with you, my early xmas presents. Unfortunately, I do not have id for some of the plants; would someone please be able to help me id them? Thank you very much in advance, & have a merry Christmas! Plant 1 A 231212 No idea what this beauty is. Is it a monstrose of some sort? Plant 1 B 231212 Plant 1 C 231212 Plant 2 A 231212 If my memory serves me correctly, the seller said this is a Echinopsis, but I'm not sure what species it is. Would you know what it is, & should I repot/water it? Plant 2 B 231212 Plant 2 C 231212 Plant 3 A 231212 The seller said that this plant is not a Euphorbia, although it looks like a E. to my novice eyes. There was no white sap when I cut it. Any ideas on what it is? Plant 3 B 231212 Plant 3 C 231212 Plant 4 A 231212 The seller said this is a Haworthia, but I did not get the species name. Plant 4 B 231212 Plant 4 C 231212 Plant 5 A 231212 The seller said this is a Haworthia also, but I did not get the species name. Plant 5 B 231212 Plant 6 A 231212 This plant is a free gift. Awesome! The seller said it a Sedum (Jelly bean), but I did not get the species name. Plant 6 B 231212 Plant 7 A 231212 Another beautiful freebie! The seller said this is a Sedum, but I did not get the species name. Plant 7 B 231212 Plant 8 A 231212 The seller said this is a Mammillaria, but I did not get the species name. Plant 8 B 231212 Plant 9 A 231212 The piece de resistance; the lucky last & my favourite piece. It was a branch & I had to cut it off myself which was not an easy task. I love its symmetry & beautiful grey/silvery blue/cyan/green complexion. The seller said it's a Cereus peruvianus, but just to be certain, can someone please verify this? Plant 9 B 231212 Plant 9 C 231212 Thank you very much everyone for taking the time to help. I most appreciate it. If you would like clearer or high res photos to help you with the id, please let me know. Best wishes! | |

| Thanks IXOXI! The seller said Plant 6 was a Sedum 'Jelly Bean Plant', so I think it might be a Sedum rubrotinctum, but I wanted to be certain & see what other members suggest. Plant 7 is a Sedum also, but I'm not sure which one.. | |

| Last one looks like Cereus Peruvianus but could also be Cereus Repandus they are extremely alike... hang on a second a book I have here says the names may be synonymous ? That's the first time I've seen that before, I thought they were a defined sub species. | |

| I'm in a bit of a rush today so this is all off the top of my head. IOW I could well be wrong.
Anyawy I'll leave the non cacti to others.
I Think 1 is Cereus peruvianus monstrose 2 is some kind of echinopsis (poss calochlora but theres a lot of echinopsis spp and hybrids) 8 Mam. vetula (=M.gracilis) - I know little about mam taxonomy but like a lot of cacti its in a state of flux. I think M.gracilis got renamed M vetula ssp gracilis. Thing is that there are 2 ssp of M. vetula diferentiated by their spination. I'll try and lookit up later. I wnent through all this a little while before wiyh my one!
and number 9. Frankly I dont what it is. Cactus cook is bettre at plant id than I am. So he's'probably right. But my first guess would have been some sort of cereus - which is a bit of a cop out. A lot of columnars were classed as cereus once upon a time. These days most of them have been assigned to new genera. The only thing I 'know' is that trichs have hairy floral tubes whereas Cereus dont.
Sometimes you need flowers to nail an id. It can be a hassle if its not flowering. I used to run into it all the time tryig to id natives. cacti can be the same!

| @HelloNasty: Thank you for your help! I have no idea what plant 9 is. The seller said its a Cereus Peruvianus but to me, the images I've seen online of C. peruvianus look different to my specimen. There's something about the spine formation/arrangement on it that look different to the ones online. I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but that's my observation. Thank you for providing the possible id of Cereus Repandus as well. I will research it. @cactuscook: Thank you very much for going to the trouble of looking at the plants and providing your ids for them. I really appreciate it! I have practically no cacti or succulent experience or knowledge at all (except for Lithops), so all the above plants are very new to me & I do not really know what to look for when trying to id them. I'm happy to know the genus name of the plants above, but to know the species and variety name (which may not be feasible) would be a real bonus in learning more about them in detail. So, again, thanks for your kind help cc. The Alluadia procera is a great lead, although, when I googled it, another plant was mentioned in Wikipedia called Fouquieria splendens which looks similar, and I do not know the difference. Sorry to add to the puzzle. Maybe when it flowers, will help with its id properly. The plant in the seller's garden was one long stem/trunk about 3.5 meters tall, with one small short branch/stem near the tip. The cutting I got was a small branch? from near the base. The Haworthias are great leads also. I thought that Plant 5 was a H. attenuata also, but Plant 4 I have no idea. Thank you for starting with H. tortosa. I will research more & see what other members think. Cool with the M. They look a lot a like and very confusing to me so your species name is a great help! Plant 9 as a Trichocereus? Possibly so, although I'm not sure what. @Charlie: Thanks Charlie for taking the time to help id my plants on such busy times. I appreciate it greatly! I now have two on the Plant 1 as Cereus peruvianus monstrose, which is awesome news . Thanks also for explaining and sharing your knowledge about M & C. Plant taxonomy is interesting but puzzling to say the least. Yes, I will plant & look after these guys & post more pics when they flower & hopefully then, their id will be more apparent. If other members have other suggestions on the above plants id, please post them up. Thanks everyone, & best wishes to you and your family. Have a very Merry Christmas! Have fun & take care. Peace! | |

| 6 - s. rubritinctum 7 - s. pachyphyllum 5 - h. attenuata 3 - alluadia sp? - watch this one re watering. they are not as tolerant of dry conditions, esp. in hot weather, so keep water regular. if leaves dry out, you need shadier spot. i had one from a cut that went so well, and unfortunately it dried out and went to heaven.
definately not Fouquieria btw 1 - an underwatered c. peruvianis monstrose by the look 4 - looks a bit like h. reinwardtii to me?
do you check your PM? | |

| Update: I've potted up all the plants, & all are doing fine except for Plant 1, Cereus peruvianus monstrose. I left it tied up in plastic bag for over a week & when I went to transplant it, it was a little yellow. Then I sprayed it with a good dosage of two types of appropriate insecticide to fix the scales problem. The plant deteriorated in health since transplant & spray, & atm it looks like a dry dead brown stem with just an inch of green left on the top of the main stem/branch. Is this the end of this plant? Can I save it & how? Plant 2, Echinopsis sp.: Over the last couple of days, one of the E. plants decided to grow a flower bud, & tonight it bloomed; gorgeous white inner petals with green furry around outer petals; spectacular white cactus flower! Sorry I cannot post pic, my camera is not cooperating. This is my first cactus flower. I'm so impressed with it & the speed it developed & bloomed over the last couple of days. Also, I believe that Plant 5 is Haworthia attenuata (instead of Haworthia fasciata). juan_y_ana on Flickr explained that H. attenuata has tubercles (roughness) with white spots in the upper face of the leaves. And it's more proliferous. Also, palmbob on Dave's Garden has identified Plant 9 as Pilosocereus pachycladus. I think he might be 100% correct. I've googled Pilosocereus pachycladus, & some pics really look like my plant. I'm really happy with this id & look forward to seeing it grow & learning more about it. Happy planting everyone! | |

| if you cut off the good bit and make sure there are no signs if rot inside the cut, it might take, but as i noted in my identification, it looked sick before you got it. might have gone to the great cactissary in the sky | |

| Thank you diddi, I will try your advice. When I bought it, I knew it wasn't in its best form, but thought I could try & bring it back to good health. Fingers crossed, there is still hope for its survival. The Echinopsis flower has flopped & remained so because of yesterday's extreme heat. Oh well, at least I enjoyed the beautiful white bloom for one moment. I also lost two Lithops yesterday b/c of the extreme heat. Not happy jan! | |
