So Called Mill ''Mud'' Empty
PostSubject: So Called Mill ''Mud''   So Called Mill ''Mud'' EmptyMon Nov 12, 2012 12:47 pm

I am curious if anyone have trialed this before? I am thinking about using it as an admixture to my soil mix along with all the other usual suspects.

The only thing I know about ''mill mud'' is that its from when they harvest the sugar cane 'fresh' instead of burning and then harvesting they dig it all up from the roots and the earth is what the sugar mill sells as ''mill mud'', its a rather fine/sandy texture and the father in-law who drives the cane trucks says it holds liquid well, so maybe I will try it in the vegie patch first.

Idea's?

Many thanks!

Kandi, most cacti grow in very poor soils, with some (like Aztekium & Geohintonia) growing in almost pure gypsuym! I would be very very hesitant to grow any of my cacti in a mix like that without doing a LOT of experiments first with cacti that I wouldn't miss should something go wrong. By all means experiment, and document, but try it with some hardy column cacti first.

I guess I'll just have a fiddle around with different amounts, I will try it with some C. Peruvianus just for giggles.

C. peruvians will grow with just about any soil though! To me it seems the darn things grow faster and stronger the richer the soil is, mine is planted in the same soil the previous owners of the house had tomato plants in and it's growth is freakish! May last year it was a mere foot or so and now it's pushing the 5 foot marker with 4 new stems starting from the base Shocked
