| Kada, Erowid provides the following information as a summary of the legal status of Lophophora (mostly in reference to L. williamsii, however some countries don't diffentiate and the laws are applicable to all Lophophora equally). Here's the link.
Personally, I reckon such laws are utter madness. All lophs are such slow growers that I would think that the risk for abuse is absolutely minimal. They are great little plants with such a history behind them, and prohibition on their cultivation is in my opinion nothing but a knee-jerk reaction from the powers that be.
At the very least, I'm not going to be munching on the few lophs that I own... and heaven help anyone else who tries.

| Honestly my aim was to grow a large large quantity of plants and distribute them for free so that people or groups of people could grow enough plants for cultivation. The cost of lophs is stupid and I think is the main barrier between people growing for pleasure and also growing for use. These are sacred plants and I agree there is much joy and pleasure in growing them. I also hoped to educate people on how to best grow them and show them that in as little as 1.5 years one can easily grow as many plants as I did if not more.
I started I think about dec 2006 with three mature plants, the seed obtained from these makes up the majority of my collection now. I didnt even try hard and I ended up with 200 plants easy. 120 grafted on trichs. I never once filled my growing system to capacity, approx 300 plants.

| Your pix are inspiring! It is a shame you had to part with the subjects.
I'm hoping to make a collection of Lophos myself, not so much sheer numbers of one type, but more a gathering of some of the species and/or 'forms' that exist. And what with the accelerated flowering achievable thru grafting I have plans/fantasies of doing a little cross-pollination. (I can have strange fantasies.)

| It's not a fantasy at all - they crosspollinate fairly easily - you just need grafting to be able to see the produced results within a smaller timeframe... | |

| Yeah I figured they'd probly cross, the fantasy was was more about me actually doing it, ie. getting the plants and then wafting around with a paint brush loaded with pollen. | |

| Lophophora is not illegal to possess in NSW and VIC. It is illegal to process everywhere in Oz, but you can own the plant in those two states. I went to a presentation a few months ago at the CSSA and it was very comprehensive about the legal issues of the plant. Regardless, I think it's ridiculous that some states permit it and some hunt it.
Nice grafts! | |
