PostSubject: Grafted Mammillaria luethyi   Grafted Mammillaria luethyi EmptySun Jan 18, 2009 3:45 pm

I lost several luethyis last winter because of red spider problem. I tried to regain numbers and grafted pups spent around one month.
I completed the grafting this morning.
I used Myrtillocactus geometrizans as root stocks. Since luethyi had long soft tubercles, I used 2 sets of special grafting devices.
One grafting process was necessary 48 hours and I spent 24 days to complete 24 pups graftings.
Geometrizans stock will meet with luethyi scion quite well and I expect a good growing and early flowering.
Stocks are in 50 mm square tubes at moment but I will repot to 90 mm olieve-pots soon.

vicki and gilligan
Stocks of geometrizanse are not so many because they have to start by cuttings.
I have not counted but it may be around 50 stocks remained.
I also have another seedling stocks aroung 100.

Again - WOW... very humbling to see such quantities of (a) healthy grafted plants and (b) such a hard to grow species.
And here I am just trying to grow the seeds never mind dare and graft one in case I lose it.

Well done Hana.

LOL Laughing

The mamms are one thing but I want to be able to get that amount of stock to use for grafting on one species.

I'm very impressed, it must have taken lots of time and energy to get to this level. Well done Hana.

Hanazono,

When you take cuttings from your mother plant, do you slice the pup off or twist it. I'm in the process of grafting of few luethyi from my only plant and don't want to cause to much damage. Just waiting for the weather to warm up again before I start mass grafting.

Cactusboy

I slice the pup off when I take cuttings from a mother plant.
Other comments on the grafting luethyi will be:
Removing all tubercles around 5mm above from the cutting face of the scion.
Put a piece of cotton on the top of the scion, it will be able to give even force on the top of the scion.

Since the tubercles of luethyi are soft and long, above two process will give a good result.

Thanks Hanazono for your advice, very very helpful.
I wasn't too sure how to approach the graft with all the soft tubercles and thought that I may damage it using my usual attachment method.

Do you dust the wound of the mother plant with sulfur powder or just leave it to dry naturally?

I just leave the mother plant to day naturally.
Adelaide is a very dry place.

I have confirmed the possiblity of tubercle grafting by using 4 Mammillaria species including luethyi.
Since I used a different root stock, the appearence was bit different from you case.
I have not get a successful result of Ariocarpus tubercle grafting yet.

Hi Hanazono, do you have and update on the luethyi tubercle grafting ? Did it continue to grow well and were there any issues because the original graft is such a small area ??

G' morning Navajo
The grafted tubercle has grown quite well, as similar as a pop grafting.
I grafted 3 tubercles of luethyi. 2 of them are in flower currently.
I will attach photo soon.

Navajo
I took a photo in this afternoon.
I grafted a tubercle in October 2006.
The tuercle has grown as a normal plant and has been in flower.

Grafted luethyi is grown quickly.
It is too quick normally and stock becomes weak even if you used a permanent stock.
I took this photo on Thursday. Almost all stocks become weak and I need regrafting.

Navajoa
I do not produce seeds.
They are clones coming from 2 sources.
One is propagated from purchased seeds by myself and the other is a cutting pup from my friend.
You can start from seed but the success ratio of germination of luethyi is very poor.
