| This plant has two cultivar genes and called Red bean koyo, kikho. Koyo: Turned color as like autumn leaves in season. It is green in summer but turned color from winter to spring in red. Turned color only during juvenil, no color change when plant is matured. You can also see "koyo" in othes species such as normal myriostigma, Onzuka, Mammillaria bocasana. Kikho: Plant shape becomes like turtle shell when plant is matured. One month old seedling, turned color already Two years old seedlings, these also turned color One year old grafted plant, turned color and appeared kikho pattern Since plant grows slower than normal myriostigma v nudum, you may graft seedling. I grafted a 40 days old seedling last year. Current diameter is 8 cm. A matured plant, diamater is 14 cm. No color change but koyo gene is remained in seeds. | |

| Hanzono, wonderful looking plants - the seed is so hard to get, and I'm with everyone else here - in line for some when you can part with some. I bought some variegated astro seed a while ago from Thailand - might have to put a few up in the comp prize, now that I think about it, but quite a few I grew have some red colouration. Two attempts to graft failed last week Roll on this weekend for another try. | |

| calycium Seeds collected from variegated plant may or may not be variegated seedlings. I crossed a variegated asterias and super kabuto last year and sown seeds August this year. It seems around 10% of seedling are variegatd. I will grow them as own root, not grafting. I hope they will be a large variegated super kabuto. 3 seedling in front are variegated. Mother plant, variegated asterias Father plant, super kabuto. Super kabuto is a small plant and normally grown by 10 cm. This one is 14 cm and quite large, and so I selected this one as the father. | Hanazona, thanks for the advice. I was wondering if I had to graft them all as they are shades of pale green with tinges of red over them. As I said grafted 2 (and failed using the stock that I got from Trig - not his fault I am a lame grafter) but I've still got 15 astros so will try another on the weekend.
Was wondering if I cold grow them on their own stock though. cheers | |

| calycium You can keep an own root variegated Astro. The degree of variegation will affect on the growing speed. 3 years old variegated super kabuto, 4 cm diameter This degree of varigation must not affect on growing speed. 3 years old varigated asterias, 3 cm diameter Growing slowly, it may be changed to all yellow color one and die in future. | |
