Sick graft?

Hi all,

just wondering what's up with this ariocarpus graft, seems to be slowly pushing out new growth but has stayed this red colour it's whole life.

Any theories?

Bear in mind Ariocarpus are incredibly slow growing plants much slower than Lophs even when grafted. That being said I believe the Ario is suffering from a mites. The mites damage the skin and this is causing the plant to be susceptible to bacteria(the Orange marks).

I would treat with powdered Sulphor and copper and see how it goes. Tomato dust works well for this however it also contains a pesticide.

It seems the Ariocarpus on your photo has been damaged the growing point area by mites attacking as Hellonasty said.
Ariocarpus will turn the body color as shown on your photo if it stopped the growing a while by any reasons.
I have experienced a similar problem.

I spray methylated spirits dilution over scions for the mites attacking.
It is possible to recover but scars will be remained unfortunately.
The attached photo is a 1 and 7 months old Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus, 8 cm diameter.
It was recovered but scars were remained.


I think the condition of your Pereskiopsis stock is also very poor.
If the scion stopped the growing, the stock should make offsets vigorously.
It may not be good enough watering frequency.

I will spray it down with a systemic fungicide/insecticide, and I will continue to treat it through the winter.

I agree the pere does not look too healthy below, in september I will re graft it, I have building up a small army of hylocereus/pere stock!!

Please note most if not all pesticides won't kill mites, you need a miticide or another method such as  Hanazono's White sprits which I have used and works well. Just be careful with the White spirits, if it's too strong you can burn the plant and too little white spirita will leave the plants wet and encourage bacteria, so you need the ratio just right.

Yep thanks HN, i will also get over there life cycle with appropriately timed applications, Bifethrin(active ingredient) from bunnings is a heavy pesticide/miticide. As well as using soapy insecticides as I don't like to spray the same thing more than once in a row when dealing with systemics. if only we could use botanical oil based insecticides on our cacti. much less smelly lol

It's a bit embarassing i do have a bit of experience with dealing with pests and diseases on a larger scale although I let it get out of hand in my own greenhouse lol
