Ferocactus? And handling

Got chatting to this old bloke on my daily adventure and he had a big one of the plant pictured. It was starting to get in the road so i helped him pull a couple troublesome limbs out of harms way. Hence the question!!

What fero is it and can I lop the old chaliced ends off and re root it?

Could be F. pillosus going by the red looking spines.
Should re-root pretty easily aslong as you let it callus over first.

Thanks SnowFella I think you might be right, it was not in full sun and looked more elongated.

I have chopped ferros like this in half and started again after having them dry out. as long as they are clean cut and allowed to callous over they regrow quite easily. don't over water the cutting (as per normal cutting propagation).

Thanks diddi I went ahead and lopped one nice and clean so I will see how it goes.
