Hello Davide, nice to see you over here.
Nice bunch of Copiapoas you have. I'm a fan of these South American beauties. They do quite well here in Tas.
I have a few specimens, some seed grown, but don't often see them for sale down here.

Cheers.

Nice plants Aajooo...

Copiapoa's are pretty popular here due in part to Rudolf Schulz, who has written a number of books on them, having his nursery here for many years...

Alas, he's "retired" now, and the nursery is no more...a big loss for us down here...

Those are some really nice plants. Smile

I must admit; I've had rather poor luck with Copiapoa. In my care, they seem rather light sensitive. Too much light and they fry... but too little light and they etiolate.

Any tips on finding a happy medium?

hello Lachy

you should try with some mist over the plants... in the morning and after the hottest hours of the day.

Copiapoas can survive thanks to the fog, not of rains. Sometimes it never rains. BUT they have EVERYDAY a fog that come from the ocean (starting at 18:00 aprox until next morning until 12:00 aprox). So, during the whole night, they receive mist.

if you want to see Copiapoas, Chile is the "only chance"... if you go to Peru, Bolivia or Argentina... there are not Copiapoas.
And many people began the trip in Chile (or Argentina) and then the keep "moving" to the north...
if you need help, just ask. Do you like Copiapoa? Icon_study

It is time that I confessed....I too am a copiapoaholic. I was lucky to get some choice plants from Rudolf Schulz and Attila Kapitany several years ago. The seeds were collected in '96 and '98. Most of the plants have GPS reference. Maybe one day I'll get a chance to see the parents of my beauties in habitat.
I really admire this genus. They are an acquired taste but to me they are the most noble of cacti. They are the most drought tolerant genus in a drought tolerant family. C. solaris is my vote for toughest perennial plant in existence.
First photo is my collection.
Do you like Copiapoa? 4524955882_74a101c446_b
Next are some favorites up close. Front is lightly spined hasseltoniana. Then from left to right we have C. columna alba, C. longistaminea (Cifuncho coastal form), C. cinerea ssp.albispina.

Spineless form of Hasseltoniana from San Ramon valley, the plan is to graft a few offsets of this one next spring for propagation.

C. tenebrosa from top of Mt Perales.

C. solaris I am in awe of this species.

Some nice C. cinerea first one is getting the waxy epidermis second has a purple body colour.

Yes Eriosyce come from Chile too. They are very closely related to Copipoa. From memory I think the main feature that distinguishes between the two genera is that the fruits of Eriosyce open at the base and Copiapoa at the top. I have tried a few intergeneric hybrids but no luck so far.

I'm loving these Copiapoas - particularly the C. cinerea. The black spines seem so striking against the waxy skin of the plant. Smile
