pereskiopsis

Okay so everyone uses Pereskiopsis for a grafting stock but has anyone ever grown one just as big as possible for the sake of it and had it flower?
My biggest one is like 50cms tall but its like a single stick and is growing some super vicious spines. i'll let it keep growing.
in a way this pereskiopsis sp. we have (whatever it is, P.spathulata/velutina?) could probably be considered a cultigen because they are all the same clone grown from cuttings only.|
although in the wild im guessing it would (rarely?) produce seed but would mainly propagate itself vegetatively.
is it possible that almost all the pereskiopsis plants in the world in cultivation are genetically identical and decended from one? lol
does it ever flower or set seed?

yeah i have had a dream of crossing pereskiopsis varieties to create a super peres! maybe one with an absence of glochids would be nice , and bigger fatter leaves, lol, im going to have to let one grow to see them flower indeed pretty

I've got a couple of plants that I'm going to grow as a garden specimen, and hopefully get to flower. It's an interesting, very primitive cactus. I really like it.

Interesting post and links, Lewis. Once tried giving Pereskiopsis a big pot and lots of nutrients. It grew 2foot in a month!
For me it is a love hate thing with this plant, scions grow fast and flower easy but the glochids make grafting nasty work, the constant offshoots are a pain and the spines seem to get ya no matter what. I have dozens of the little bastards stuck in me Should be renamed Pestyopsis I reckon.

Yeah I agree re the spines and annoyance, I hardly use it anymore except for a few species that really love it and dislike Hylo and Harrisia.


I have one in a big pot at the moment. It has spread out and it's now growing in the garden bed next to it It is about 1.5m tall and going nuts.

Thought I would chuck a bit more on this thread. I am better set up for adding to the forum now so you may hear more from me. I am getting a bit off topic but anyway...
This is an exhausted perry after four years, The Mammillaria pectenifera (can't be bothered checking spelling) on there were much bigger before the stock gave out and they deflated. This is only the second stock that has given up the ghost like this from many grafts. The second pic is of a bit of degrafting I did from this stock recently.

One of my Pereskiopsis has escaped its pot & headed up the mulberry tree, its at 9' & literally climbing. The bottom 5' is just bark & 2" spines, not a leaf or flower to be seen

Hey crypto, odd how in the first pic the stock just collapsed, i mean yeah i can see it was not overly large andlooks to be exhausted from sustaining three decent sized scions but do you think the reason could be some kind of pathogen; just seeing how it looks really dehydrated near the base? like some kind of root problem.

Hey i think i recall you told me that when you grafted Mam Fred to Pereskiopsis the stock went really weird or something? Just wondering do you have any pics of that?

Not much hope of seeing anything amongst the mulberry foliage, but i can get a few pic's tomorrow after it gets the chop. Bloody thing leapt out and accosted me today while i was rearranging Epi's, so its chopin time
