That's actually a cactus Emma Unknown Succulents Icon_biggrin It's a tephrocactus, don't know the exact botanical name.

Most likely Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus

That's a really nice plant. It actually looks like it might be a decent age... since they tend to be rather fragile, I'd be quite proud to own something like that.
