Root Hormone Empty
PostSubject: Root Hormone   Root Hormone EmptyMon Apr 06, 2009 2:27 pm

I've been experimenting with root hormone on different cacti and succulents. In another thread Hanazono also mentioned that he used it to help promote root growth when degrafting an Obregonia.
I'm just curious whether anyone has had any success with using it with there plants.

I've been thinking,
Can it be used with cacti?
If so, what tissue does it work best with?

I think every one using different method of degrafting/rooting which you believe it is the best.
I break off a scion from the root stock and dry by using garden-lime.
After dried, washing off garden-lime completely.
I use rooting hormone (Gel) after completely dry (from washing).
There is a rooting hormone specialized for cacti overseas but we can not get it in here.
I keep the scion on a top of black empty pot until some roots coming out, showing as below.

As shown below, roots coming out, now you can put it on rooting medium ( I use shifted clay base cat litter.).
I think the rooting gel assists for rooting a bit.

When planning to use the hormone, do you leave any vascular tissue from the stock on the scion?

In normal degrafting, I remove vascular tissue of root stock from scion completely if it is remained.

There is another methods called "Zui-oroshi" which remained short vascular bandles intentionally.
Zui-oroshi is not real degrafting but Jananese use commonly.
Plants rely on roots coming out from the vascular bandles for initial 2 years or so but own root will backup eventually.
