PostSubject: Do you like a red flower?   Do you like a red flower? EmptySun Nov 02, 2008 6:25 am

I tried to get a red flower Astrophytum asterias last several years. I bought seeds of red flower asterias every year but I was disappointed many times because flowers were not exaxtry red, apricot color. Last week an asterias, sown seed last year got a red flower. The stigma was also red. I did crossing with a few asterias.
Do you think it is red enough?

I love it!

I want one!

Hanazono that is a beautiful colour, I've got a few seedlings of the "red" flowered form too, hardly bigger than a match head yet... if I end up with one half as nice as yours I'll be over the moon.

I think it is not perfectly red but better than this.
This is a typical pink flower, Astrophytum myriostigma.

It's not red at all. It's a darker pink than the one you just showed but its still pink.

It's just like the Trichocereus grandiflorus colors. I have two, one labeled orange, the other red. Really they're just subtly different tones of red.

I think people just like the idea of having a bunch of different coloured flowered species. it's heaps cooler to say i have two plants, one red one pink, than it is to say I have to different kinds of pink flowers. or something. sorry i'm dribbling now.

Hello Hanazono, the flower you showed us is very nice.
It's not completely red but is deep pink, very big and well formed.
And the asterias is superkabuto too! We also have some red flower asterias but this character seems to be recessive. This summer we crossed two of them and we will sow the seeds next days.

It is a very nice red flower. The body color, dark green ruri(azure) is also very good.
Your plant is still young. I hope it will be true azure in mature.

There are two types red flower asterias. One is a flower color mutation of asterias, dark red.
The other is transferred from pink flower myriostigma to asterias.
I think your ruri is a flower color mutation one.
