PostSubject: White powery substance   White powery substance EmptyWed Apr 09, 2008 5:19 pm

Hey all,
I've got a mammillaria and recently I found that it has white poweder all over it, and when I shake it it comes off the plant. Its not as fine as talcum powder, its more like - egads just thought about it, small eggs??
Should I quaranteen the plant - burn it, spray it?
I've also noticed the same colour almost like cob web material appear on several of my wooly astrophytums - at first I thought it was just the cacti wool.

Any advice.

Will post a photo if it helps.
thanks in advance

Yeah im with PD Send us a pic mate. Could be anything from what you describe. The fine cobweb material is probably due to mites, but don't freak some are good mites and some are bad....very bad.

I was thinking it sounded a bit like red spider mite. Hopefully not.

I would quarantine them and keen a close eye on them.

Post some pics here so we can take a look & then find out the best way to treat them.

Thanks all for the comments - here is a link to a pic - oh yeah and if anyone can ID the mammillaria for me that would be good too. Bought it from BIG W of all places last year.

The white stuff is visible on the top, when I shake it it falls off?

Yeah its mealy for sure calycium, i was out a few nurseries today and noticed the exact same thing on a great deal of the mamms i saw for sale. Different nurseries that had the same mamms in the same sort of pots, ie same stock, and the majority were infested.

PD,
Thanks for that - mealy bug...

Is there a easy fix - soapy water and garlic, or olive oil and pepper, or just go straight to the toxic chems?

cheers

Rogor is a very good one also. Best to use some thing thast is going to kill them all and not leave any stragglers to build up an immunity to other less effective treatments.
