Trichocereus spachianus ?

HI folks,
I picked up some of these tips (with the promise to return for more) for someone wanting to clear the garden. I'm pretty sure they are T spachianus but can't be that sure.
what do you guys think? I'm hoping to use them for grafting stock .. so hopeing they are as thought.

Yep! I'd say T. spachianus....

Or Echinopsis whatever-its-called-now.

haha yes. thats its current name. its incredibly healthy, shinny and fat, just begging to have something grafted to it.

I wasn't sure if you agreed it was T spach - or something else... which wasn't as usefull sorry for the confusion

Basically, everything that was a Trichocereus is now in Echinopsis. In some cases, specific names have remained the same or similar (eg. T. spachianus -> E. spachiana, T. peruvianus -> E. peruviana, T. pachanoi -> E. pachanoi) but in other cases the specific epithet has changed (eg. T. bridgesii -> E. lageniformis).

Studying nomenclature and its rules is a great way to take the fun right out of botany.

I try not to get too hung up on it though. Essentially, the convention of naming is only there to make sure two parties know what is being discussed without ambiguity. If you know what I mean, and I know what you mean, then unless you're writing a scientific paper, who cares.

A good thing to keep in the back of your mind when you're perusing online seed shops and can't find the Trichos though!

hey WT i think i caused the confusion... i always call it Trichocereus spachianus and only referred to it as Echinopsis spachiana in this instance because Squil said 'Or Echinopsis whatever-its-called-now.' sorry should have clarified earlier.

I learnt the Trichocereus / Echinopsis basics while getting seeds from 'Arizona cacti' its a good one to know
