I have a Opuntia ficus-indica.  First year it has flowered and produced *one* fruit.  The skin is now fully red.  How do I know when it's ripe?  I'm in Melbourne.

Opuntia fruit tend to split when they are over-ripe. Are you wanting to eat it or collect the seeds?

For eating. It began going red perhaps three weeks ago. It looks ripe if the color is anything to go by.

Normally they are ripe when the whole fruit has turned a nice red. If it still looks a bit green near the base I would let it go for a few more weeks. Having said that they still taste just fine if they are a little on the green side. "Prickly pears" are my most favourite fruits. Very fond childhood memories.

It looks very red at the moment. I guess I should pick it before the 'noisy miners' discover what it is Smile
