An interesting Astro seedling (with pics) Empty
PostSubject: An interesting Astro seedling (with pics)    An interesting Astro seedling (with pics) EmptySun Sep 13, 2015 4:45 pm

Hey everyone,
I have been keeping a close eye on the seedling pictured below.
It is near white with only a slight tone of yellow to it and has remained this way since it sprouted.

It's been around 2 weeks and no green has formed at all.
Fingers crossed it will turn out to be something interesting.
I imported the seed from Germany and it is either a "Japanese" or "Thai" Astrophytum hybrid.

Any thoughts?

I think you have to wait a while but it will be "akebono-ban", twilight variegation.
When you crossed different flower color Astrophytum, it will be happened with a high percentage.

asterias: yellow petals and orange throat
myriostigma: yellow petals
If you crossed above 2 species, seedlings show akebono-ban, quite many.

Asterias and coahuilense have same flower colors.
These crossings will make less number of akebono-ban seedlings.

The akebono-ban is caused by a hybridization problem.

I assume you do not know what species were crossed because you bought seeds from others.

Thank you for the reply.
I am unsure of the parent plants as the seed was just labelled as a "hybrid mix"
hopefully I can keep it alive, the twilight variegated plants aren't very strong are they?
Think I might graft it once it's a little older.

The last lot of seed I purchased from the same supplier produced some interesting plants, I'll post some photos tomorrow.

Yes the twilight variegated cacti are weak and less chance of flowering.
