Hi,

Very nice plant mate, I am new to all the astro cultivars, is this bred by the forum member Hanazono?

I am thinking of going shopping for an astro tomorrow at a local nursery lol

Cheers

Hello Frankyr!

I am new too :-)

No, this cactus was not bred by Hanazono.
Hanazono is the name for one of the many Astrophytum asterias cultivars:

"Some additional woolly areoles are produced on the ribs surface. Flowers buds develop from the median line between two ribs  and usually they are not produced by areoles."
Have a look at this web page.  I love it!

http://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/ASTROPHYTUM/Astrophytum_asterias/Astrophytum_asterias_hanazono/Astrophytum_asterias_cv_Hanazono.htm.

Up here I find only very few cactus species and always and everywhere the same species too.  If your nursery does have them, please let me know.

Hi stern,

Thanks for the reply, i find it hard remembering different species names and characteristics that go with them. Now to delve into the world of Astro cultivars haha.

Cheers

Hanazono means "a flower garden" in English.
I just use this name as an internet field name.

I also have several Hanazono kabutos.
I will attach a photo, one of my plants.
You can understand why this is called "Hanazono kabuto".

If you could keep an asterias years, it will show the hanazono character.
I have quite many old normal asterias, more than 10 years old who push multiple flowers up between ribs. The photo is one of them, 12 years old, 15 cm in diameter.
