I have tried to create an asterias cultivar, red flowering hanazono kabuto.
I have 20 of 3 years old red flowering asterias. Several ones were in flower in spring and confirmed the flower color.
I also have several mature hanazono kabutos. I used one of them as a parent.
I harvested 2 types of 1st filial seeds.
(A) Red flowering asterias x Hanazono kabuto
(B) Hanazono kabuto x Red flowering asterias
I sowed seeds (A) on 29/11/2014 and seeds (B) on 27/11/2014.
Seeds (B) were quite small compared to normal asterias seeds.
The germination rates of both types were not too bad.
(B) Seedlings were also small as same as seeds.
I grafted 12 of each type seedlings, in total 24 on Pereskiopsis stocks.
Rests were remained as own-rooted seedlings.
(A) was grafted very soon, 5 days after germination but I waited a bit for (B) because seedlings were too small to graft.

(B) Taken photo on 14/01/2015
5. Updated photos taken today, 21/02/2015
(A) Several scions have turned to monstrosa form. Healthy ones show hanazono's character.
(B) Scions show also hanazono's character. The color of spines is an evidence of red flowering.
6. Next happenings
Scions will grow until June but I will not be able to see any flowers in this season.
1st flowering will be in September.
I will do updated reporting.
