Dracaena draco advice? Empty
PostSubject: Dracaena draco advice?   Dracaena draco advice? EmptyTue Apr 08, 2014 8:22 pm

Perhaps someone here has experience with these plants?

I was relocating a Dracaena Draco succulent for the winter and noticed roots emerging from the holes in the bottom of the pot.

I'm wondering how long can it be kept it in the same pot before repotting or placing in the ground?  The plant is currently in a 200 mm pot and as yet still quite small (70 cm tall).  I don't want to use a bigger pot unless necessary.  If the roots are anything like they were at the beginning of summer i.e. sparse but long, then contents of the pot will still be largely soil...

Thanks

I have had a draco in the same pot for over 6 years, it's a relatively large pot unsure of exact size.
The roots are extremely pot bound but this doesn't seem to phase it.
I recently took it out of the pot, broke the roots up and cut them back and then refreshed the soil but put it back into the same pot.
They are an extremely hardy plant and will tolerate major neglect.
Don't over water it and it will be just fine.

they like being in small containers. best to keep there roots confined also.
walker has the right idea trimming the roots and returning to original pot.
6 yrs in 1 pot is minimal for dracos.
i wouldnt trim the roots to often but every few years or more maybe benificial.
nice plants.

Thanks everyone for the care information and tip about trimming the roots.  I was browsing Ebay and saw some in pots with quite long stems.  Seems I have a long way to go before I'll be needing to repot!  BTW there's a 30-year old one going at the moment for for $8000.  They sure look great.

At least my draco is growing - which can't be said of some Joshua Tree I germinated from seed.  At 15 cm they're still sitting in milk cartons.  Apart from roots coming out the holes I didn't notice any growth this summer ...
