Hey sneaky,

That Ario is a regular Retusus, as for a date I will have to work it out.. I think it would be around 7 years old. For it being only 7 years it has grown amazingly fast. I sowed the seed in 2007 (I think) and it was grafted to pereskiopsis, I kept it on the graft for about 5 years before I degrafted it and eventually it rooted Smile

Check this out I found some older pictures of it..

Fantastic. How long did it take to root after de-grafting? I have a heap of ario seedlings that i would like to graft but only if I can get the off the graft safely later on. I have been very hesitant to attempt any more grafting. I have had so many failures lately. The only successful ones i have done so far is the pelecyphora grafts last year.

Yeah deg rafting can be difficult, just be sure to degrafted when you have plenty of warm weather left, you don't want to be degrafting ariocarpus in Autumn.
Rooting took about 2months.

Also be aware Retusus is the easiest Ario to degraft, Fissuratus can be much more difficult.

nice. hellonasty they are all quite nice specimens. i really like the astro in the 3rd & 4th pics. suttle yet striking.

well done with the ario... pereskys are a hell of a stock if you are delicate enough... i am not! i have had two succesfull grafts atop pereskys showing new growth and managed to dry them both out. the rest (a few) all dried out long before showing any signs of growth!

now let me come across like a tool...

1st picky... is it a macrogonoid? or is it a peruvianoid? or, is it neither?

i have one very similar indeed and for a long while i thought it were some pachanoi variant/hybrid???

i gave up on that idea and eventually lent toward a torch var... still i am certian i cannot label it one as im 99% certian i am probably wrong.

cheers.

Hey wert,

Trichcereus ID's are difficult and made even more so due to poor record keeping by some of the pioneers, not mentioning any names but some will know who I'm referring to, the first plant in my opinion is a Peruvianus. Without going into huge detail Macrogonus in my view is not a sub species but rather a variant inside the subspecies Peruvianus.

that make me feel good on the inside. i really was leaning toward torch for both your plant and the one i have i my collection.

i have found this plant the 2nd fastest growing from cutting to root/grow of all the cacti i have dealt with. only spachianus has shown me its more dedicated to growing.
