PostSubject: About to graft some A. caput-medusae   About to graft some A. caput-medusae EmptyThu Jan 19, 2012 12:28 am

Hi all,
I am about to graft a number of A. caput-medusae (onto multiple types of root stock), and as this is a species that I have not done before, any suggestions, hints or tips that might help me along? I am going to try at least 2 onto Pereskiopsis, what would be the best way to fasten the scions onto those? Thanks in Advance. As I go along, I can also post pics to show progress or failures. (Hopefully much more success then the failure!).

Ixoxi, there is nothing special with grafting ACM seedlings on Pereskiopsis or Selenicereus.
As long as they are young, you dont have to fasten the scions. Keep them moist for 3-5 days (like any other graft), for example put a bottle over the pot.
You may even cut the ACM-seedling in half and graft both parts.

Nice pic Torro Very Happy

I find it depends how big the seedlings you are going to graft are, for seedlings less than 6 months I would use nothing at all besides the sap/juice of each plant. The sap will create enough grip to hold the scion in place.

For older seedlings I use thin cloth attached at each end small sinkers.

I'll be doing a whole tray of them, under 6 months old, and mostly onto Pereskiopsis, though a few will be on other root stock for comparison.

Pictures from me:

Hello,

today I will show you my vegetativ graftings from acm.
I have 9 different clons, from this I make grafts and seeds every year.
With this article, I will show you my work this year 2010.

graftings from spring 2011 on bigger F. glaucescens, clon 1-3

few months later:

Now, the first plants are ready to sale - they are all away from this year. I keep a few plants for the mother asset flexible-carnose and the tuberkels of acm can better drive out after 1-2 months after grafting.

I hope I can show you some of my grafting.

Thanks for the write up Echinopsis. Never heard of people using Ferocactus as a stock plant, growth looks good Smile

Echinopsis, when you graft onto the Ferocactus glaucescens, do you put anything onto the open cuts to keep it from drying out? Or do you keep it in a humid environment instead? If so, how do you bring it to normal humidity? Thank you again!

Interesting to see the use of Ferocactus glaucescens as a grafting stock Echinopsis. Like HN, I have never heard of that. Seems to work extremely well for the ACM grafts.

Have you any progress reports/pics IXOXI?

Yes, the first set of grafts are healing up nice, haven't lost any yet, and I have measured growth in one of them already. I'll do pictures tomorrow. Also I have acquired a number of the ferocacti for later trials using it for grafting.

Ok, update time. I did a whole series of grafting techniques on these, including using the root half of the seedling in some of the grafts, and some of these have multiple sections of the seedlings on different branches of the peres. In total there's over 100 grafted plants here. This is a panorama photo of the ACM / peres graft forest.

I'll keep track here of the failure rates of the different kinds of grafts as time goes on.

Ok, time for an update. I have lost about 15% of these since I started. However the ones that are growing are doing so by leaps and bounds. This is a photo of the most advanced one, mind you these were seeds in November, and grafted in January.

About to graft some A. caput-medusae Img_1514

I'd say they are going along well. This one has 4 tubercles, the smallest is just coming out.
Later this year, I may trade a few of them, as I have over 80 now.
