Its about 4 months old, sp.La Plaz, im pretty impatient so Ive been grafting some from all different genera just to hurry things up, its also good if worried about rot ,or sciarid fly larvae eating seedlings .

Looks like it is pupping from the callus that was made during the grafting process. Is this common?

Ariocarpus fissuratus grafted at 30days in Jan 2010. So it is now 2 years old i could have pushed the growth a little more but that does not bother me as i use my grafts for seed production.

Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus grafted at 30 days in Jan 2010. At 2 years old. Check out what i think might be a crest forming. Fingers crossed.

Amazing growth for 2 years especially the Fissuratus, I find those buggers grow so slowly even when grafted. Lets hope that is a crest, certainly looks promising to me, Kotsch crests look amazing.

I have been experiencing a strange growth habit with grafted ariocarpus, I think I remember cyptocarpa writing about it previously. What happens is a small section usually towards the base starts to pup, then suddenly a million little pups start to form next to it almost like a mutation of some kind ?

Just Re potted all my grafts when i get a chance i will take a pic though the kotsch has not grown at all due to being severely under potted. I should see a big difference in 6 months.

CC you have some brilliant plants, and that one is a beauty! I am in awe of the skills that some ppl on this forum seem to possess.

Sorry if this is a silly question, or if you've answered it before, but are these grown in natural light?

cheers

I start my seedlings in a mini environment with lights and heat mats but that's only mid year up until November and i have a small cupboard that i stick my grafts into just to heal so they stay there for a max of 3 weeks.
Then I grow everything in natural light as its free and in my opinion is so much better for plant growth in natural condition's from as early as possible. Unless its middle of winter then i keep grafts in cupboard for a little longer a few months max.
My main house has white polycarb which blocks 50% and my other hothouses are covered in solar-weave plastic and then covered with 50% white shade clothe i add another layer in mid summer for several weeks only to keep temps down.

Thanks for that!

I've often wondered about what would be an appropriate level of shelter for outdoor cacti. (It would depend somewhat on the species and where you lived I suppose.) So its very interesting to learn what it is that you use. It certainly seems to work!
