How to get Myrtillocactus geometrizans Empty
PostSubject: How to get Myrtillocactus geometrizans   How to get Myrtillocactus geometrizans EmptyMon Apr 28, 2008 8:05 pm

I need some for my Sulorebutia Rauchii graft, and now a crested mammillaria elongata, but where do I get gold of it?
I've seen some seeds for sale. What is the groups view on growing seed and then grafting smaller plants to even smaller grafts.

Is it better to buy a big piece and grow offcuts, then root them AND THEN do your graft.

I'm impatient - want to start grafting now, so is there a way?

Does anyone know where to buy it.
Yes, at bunnings I could rip the coloured grafted gymnos off of it and start from there, but at $^ a plant that would be a little sad.

any thoughts - I'm guessing patience / seeds etc.

Cuttings are generally better grafting stocks as seedlings tend to topple. Grafting seedlings (hypocotyl grafting) is a whole other ball game. There was a good site about it but can't remember the address. Will have to search my other computer.

I can get you some nice Blue Myrtle cuts, I have PMd you.

Previously I have purchased big pieces, chopped them in half for the grafts and rooted the offcuts for future grafts. I'm ready to go again on third hand stock right now Very Happy

I can't get them anymore calycium. Sorry bout that. Will let you know if my mate gets some more soon. I am also looking for a cut or two of the Blue Myrtle (preferrably of good girth), of course calycium gets first dibs because he was the one who requested it.

So if anyone has spare let us (calycium & I) know.

Cool,
Thanks for that - I did find a piece at Bunnings, and will chop it in half, reroot the top section and use the lower for a graft. Its probably about 8 inches tall, so it will have to do.

Happy to get hold of more from anyone when its available (thanks Trig for 1st dibs )

Now to decide IF I should graft in winter... mmmmmmmm sound of Calycium pondering

I'd like to put my name down for some of the Blue Myrtle too please... I've got pach as my loph grafting stocks at the moment, would be interesting to trial a couple of others in comparison... (have some hylo's that i'm cranking as well in preparation for some arios)

I am still looking for the Blue Myrtle too. Surely there must some out there?

I think the Blue Myrtle would be preferrable for grafting Arios though, Hylos are more commonly used for Astros, well that's my understanding anyway.

Love to hear results though.

Oh yeah, anyone got any Blue Myrtle cuts Wink Cal & gilligan get dibs before though, cheers for bumping this thread, reminded me of what I need.

How to get Myrtillocactus geometrizans Empty
PostSubject: Re: How to get Myrtillocactus geometrizans   How to get Myrtillocactus geometrizans EmptyMon Sep 15, 2008 12:50 am

G'day everyone,
I only joined a few minutes ago so I'm not too sure how all this works. But I have a Blue Myrtle (Myrtillo. geometrizans). It was getting a bit top heavy so I lopped it a while ago. The top bit is now growing happily in a pot and the original plant now has two small side branches growing from where it was cut.

Its a vigorous plant, very solid with a distinct blue tinge to its stem.

So if anyone wants one or both of these branches I'll be happy to send 'em. They are pretty small (ie about 6cm long and about 4-5 cm in diam.) but they're fine and healthy, and the plant grows very quickly in the warm weather.

I could leave them on the plant to let them get larger and then send them in a few weeks, but they seem to strike easily when small, so there shouldn't be any real problems.

(BTW with the way this thing grows I'll have more in a while if anyone is interested).

if your really in a pinch how about another specie?

myrtles are great, and the fatter the better. i know its hard to wait, but it is really worth waiting and letting one grow a couple meters high and top it, it will sned out FAT offsets that are great for grafting!

What species are there that are fast growing kada?

I've got spach and pach, but dont want to use my bridgies/peruv's for grafting.
Looks like i'm getting some myrtillo Smile, and i've got hylo's that i'm prop'g, but if there are other fast growing columnars good for grafting, i'm all ears

All Myrtillocactus SP are great stocks. Harrisia Jusbertii is also a fantastic choice. Check out this thread for more info and discussion. http://forum.auscactiforum.net/specialist-cultivation-f31/stocks-vs-stocks-t58.htm

PostSubject: Re: How to get Myrtillocactus geometrizans   How to get Myrtillocactus geometrizans EmptyTue Sep 16, 2008 8:35 am

Grin... only prob is they aint grafting fast enough for me to graft... have pups and peres/pach grafts ready to become scions, but not enough stocks for them scions to move onto... lol. Spring should help me out with some of that (plenty of spach and pach in the ground, awaiting the new growths), but yeah, obvioulsy chasing as much as i can get Smile This damn cacti collecting/grafting affliction... Smile

Getting some myrtillo as well, so hopefully this time next season, i'll have a definite supply Smile (i know this is wishful thinking, looking at the number of grafts i'll have to do by then...

There is better places to get decent seed with better viability and their Mytles are tiny. Still it's a good shop.
