PostSubject: Hana's cactus seedlings in 2015/2016   Hana's cactus seedlings in 2015/2016 EmptyThu Jul 23, 2015 7:34 pm

I sowed cacti seeds in 6 pots in this afternoon, super kabuto in 2 pots and miracle kabuto in 4 pots.
I did not count number of seeds but more than 50 seeds in a pot.
It was 1st sowing in this season.
I normally sow around 40 species seeds every year but it will be 18 in this year.
All seeds were harvested from my own plants.

The setting is as usual:
Potting-mix, evenly mixed the following materials
- Organic material---1
- 2 mm clay grains---1
- 2 mm scoria---1
- 2 mm zeolite---1
- Coarse sand---1

Top dressing
- 4 mm zeolite

Pots
-10 cm square pots
-20 mm free-board

Sterilization
-Nil, but a fungicide is splayed over seeds, soil and pots.

Heating
-A heating pad is used, 30 'C is the target temperature at the top dressing.

Light
-Natural

6 pots are on the heating pad and wrapped over by a plastic sheet.

A lid is placed and temperature setting is completed.
The germination process will be completed in 2 weeks.

Free-board is the distance between top dressing and top of pot end.
As shown on the 1st photo, pots are wrapped by a plastic sheet.
Each pot has 200 cm^3 of room above the top dressing which should be 100% humidity.
100% humidity is necessary for the good germination rate of cactus seeds.

If the free-board is too small, germinated seedlings will contact the plastic sheet.
If the free-board is too large, a shade will cover a part of top dressing because I use natural light.

David

I got 10 off-set cuttings from a member of NSW Cactus Society in 2008.

Pereskiopsis does not tolerate cold climate and it should be propagated by cuttings.
It is still in winter in here.
I have stopped watering for Pereskiopsis at moment and their conditions are quite poor.
I think the situation of people lived in southern Australia may be similar.

I assume some ones of your state have Pereskiopsis and possible to make some off-set cuttings.

Once these sprout do you use flourescent light or stick with natural light? (Assuming its also winter where you are) Im new to seed raising mixes, I'm about to try it out for myself. What purpose does the clay and scoria serve in this mix, can they be replaced by something else?

I can get the following from GreenLifeASoil. Gypsum, biochar, dolomite, diatomaceous earth, potash, iron chelate, spongolite, rock dust, zeolite. Would any of those be suitable replacements to clay/scoria?

I move pots in a plastic box located in my greenhouse after the completion of germination.
The light is natural and no heating facilities even in winter.
Cactus seedlings tolerate cold climate.

Potting-mix for young cactus seedlings should not be too wet, too dry.
Non-permeable grain such as silica sand keeps water between grains and dry quickly and you have to water frequently.
As the result, you will make too wet condition.
Permeable materials such as clay and scoria can keep water in the grain and hold it quite long.
A capillary mat is laid on the bottom of plastic box and the box has a lid.
I just feed water over the mat, not over pots every 6 month.
You can not feed water over young cactus seedlings.

Any permeable materials can replace clay/scoria.

I repot cactus seedlings in early spring, once per year.
The repotting will accelerate the growing speed of seedlings but you may loose some at the same time.
I have plenty of 1 and 2 years old seedlings.
Repotting is quite big job for me in this season.

1 year old Astrophytum fukuryu banjaku
Banjyaku is a hybid of myriostigma x ornatum.
I got seeds from my friend and sowed on 17th July last year.
24 seedlings were grafted and rest are kept as own-root seedlings.
I will select "fukuryu" only. All others will be returned to soil.

1 year old Ariocarpus retusus v scapharostroides
I have too many 1 year old Ariocarpus seedlings and so I reduce sowing seeds in this year.

2 years old Obregonia denegrii
Sown seeds on 9th August 2013 and repotted 100 seedlings in August last year.
All of them have grown well, no casualties.

I removed seedlings of A. Hybrid fukuryu banjyaku from pots in this morning.
Since the rotting of Astrophytum will start from the tap-roots, I washed roots by water and checked.
The photo is 25 seedlings showing fukuryu characters, after washed.
I will cut roots to adjust length before the repotting.

Roots will regrow but it will be fine roots only, no tap roots regrowing.

David

I have not sown E. grusonii lately.
The last sowing of E. grusonii seeds were in 2000.
Since I did not have any heating pads at that time, the germination process was also carried out in the wet-box.
You can keep any cactus seedlings in a wet-box for 2 years including E. grusonii.

In 2007, seedlings reached to around 15 cm and I moved them to outdoor.
10 plants, around 60 cm in diameter have still been in my vege-patch.
They are in flower in summer.

Looks great, Im inspired. I'm about to try my own seed germination. I have a few questions.

I'm doing the takeaway container method, but with proper lights and heating mat. Different containers for Astrophytum, Lophophora, and Trichocereus. The seeding mix will be -

-seed raising soil mix
-zeolite
-crushed rock
-coco coir

Will this be sufficient? What proportions would you recommend with these materials? I also have perlite and bentonite clay, should I use these?

Do I need to drill holes in the bottom of the container or can I just leave it sealed?

The crushed rock has rock dust with it, do I need to remove the dust or rinse it off?

Can I use the lights from the start or do I need to wait until the seedlings appear? Do the seeds need to be in the dark?

If the seeds are sprinkled on the medium, do i need to sprinkle sand on top or leave them at the surface? Do I push them in a bit with a pencil?

Thank you for your help, your work is amazing.

Convergence

I have never used the takeaway container method but I used a similar one.

Potting-mix:
Seed rising mix is including organic materials.
I do not know why you also add coco coir which is also an organic material.
If you had coarse sans, I recommend:
Potting-mix-2
Zeolite-2
Crashed rock-1
Coarse sand-1

Bottom holes for drainage are necessary.

Dust of crashed rock has to be removed by shifting or rinsing.

Light is not necessary for germination but seeds can germinate under the light.
You can turn light on from start.

The necessity of top dressing depends upon the size of seeds.
Astrophytum- required top dressing
Lophophora- both of with/without top dressing will work
Tricocereus- I do not know the size of seeds

You should not push seeds down onto soil.

I used a clear plastic box, larger than a takeaway container.
Seedlings are Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus.

Love your work Hanazono.

How are you achieving your particle sizes of 2mm?

Are the particles 2mm and finer (0.2mm fine particles up to 2mm with dust removed), or are you using a 3mm sieve on top of a 2mm sieve and using the particles that don't fall through the 2mm sieve and calling that 2mm, i.e 2-3mm particles?

Thanks!

I shift dust out and finest is around 0.5 mm.

Q-cactus

I buy 25 kg zeolite bags specified as 2 mm & under.
The product includes very fine particles, around 5 %.
I shift and remove less than 0.5 mm size for seed rising mix.

For the repotting of 1 year old seedlings, I use original one, no sifting.

I repotted Ariocarpus seedlings in 2 pots yesterday evening.
Seedlings are my seed No. 20, Ariocarpus retusus v scapharostrides posted the photo on 25th July.
I reuse pots after washed by diluted bleach.
The attached photo is after repotted, 25 seedlings in a 10 cm square pot.

Ariocarpuse seedlings grow very slowly but they grow surely, not stop.
The photo is 2 years old A. kotschoubeyanus f Rio Verde repotted in August last year.
As shown on the photo, you can minimize the rotting of seedlings if you could lift up the joint of tap-root and tubercles above the top of soil.

They have grown well and need repotting again.

The planned germination process completion of 1st batch is 5th in this month.
The next sowing seeds are Echinocactus horizontharonius.
Seeds of this species have hard shells and the germination success rate is quite low normally.

I use a method as the trial, which is hydrochloric acid washing.
This method is also used for lotus seeds germination.
The process time is just 15 minutes if you could use primary liquid of hydrochloric acid.

Unfortunately I just could get unknown concentration one and did a test.
It seemed the liquid was very low concentration and the reaction was quite gentle.

The start of the washing

The end of washing, 1 hour later from the start
The liquid is turned color slightly.

Although the original seed is black and glossy, the processed seed is blown and no gross.
I am not sure the method can work or not but I will sow seeds on 5th in this month, 3 pots each.
