A pest plant for sure, but this sort of story makes everyone wary of Cacti in general.. "Killing small animals"

http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/cactus-invasion-takes-over-goldfields-bushland-20150126-12wvif.html

Not good for our hobby... and we must all be responsible with what we grow and how we dispose of plants or offcuts.

Not very good. The reality is this is a problem that has been left over from the old days. It would be a shame to see negative consequences for the modern day collector because of mistakes made in the past.

yeah that's nasty stuff and shouldn't be in the wild. I do wonder what they mean by "They're (Australian scientists) looking at using the cochineal, a bug, to control the coral cactus but they are still working on whether they can release that,". doesn't cochineal bug = mealy bug? God knows that nasty pest is already in the wild and a menace to all plants. hope their control goes better than that calici rabbit virus they lost control of. Can you imaging what a super-mealy bug would do...

Yeah this kind of article really doesn't help us in any way and in reality this is far from a big issue. There are many other weeds and more importantly pests that are damaging our produce and livestock.

Soon we'll be hearing calls to have cacti banned (again).

It's easy to demonize non-native plants and animals but the reality is even native species can become problematic and need management. A case in point is the 'noisy miner' - a native bird whose numbers are now such that it's got scientists seriously worried. It may well become the first native species to be declared a threat to Australian biodiversity.
